Day 8: My head hurts

Hey, remember how peaceful I was feeling? How mellow, how accepting, how go-with-the-flow?

Time to kick it up a notch. Bam!

That sound you just heard was not the cheerful grunt of a short and bandy TV chef. It was the sound of me slamming my forehead against the wall. Hard.

The relaxed feeling I'd managed to cultivate was instantly dispelled this morning the moment the doctor aimed the ultrasound probe at my left ovary. When you're doing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, what you want to see on the screen is a tidy complement of dark blobs, all approximately the same size. What you don't want to see is a big black spot dwarfing its fellows.

Unfortunately, that's what I saw this morning. I have one follicle on my left ovary that's at 14 mm. Its closest followers are in the neighborhood of 11 mm.

It's too early to say whether it's a dominant follicle, the condition that caused the cancellation of IVF #2. I'll know more when my bloodwork results are in later today, and more still after tomorrow morning's scan.

Plenty of time between now and then to work up a really impressive bruise just north of my eyebrows. I'm pretty sure my frontal bone was in need of a good flattening, anyway.
