Can I just add to the joke? I had to look this up to confirm that you didn't invent this, and found a perfectly hilarious picture of a "typical cornhole board" on wikipedia (so you know it's true)

I had to look it up too; what a ridiculous name! But, hey, now we know what to add to our Christmas lists...

The name they use for that in my sister's neighborhood is "bags." As in "Come on over! We'll grill some burgers and play bags."
The part of me that snickers at "cornhole" can't help but think about teabagging, the intimate practice I learned about from Sex and the City. I wonder which one they played at last weekend's Cooter Festival out near my in=laws'—cornhole or bags.

My husband is the 4th of July cornhole champion three years running. We call it the beanbag game, however.

OMG, so glad you are back!

Oh thank you thank you for posting this. About a month ago, I sat through a lunch with a peer I intensely dislike and our bosses' bosses' boss. She was going on and on about playing cornhole at some party she'd thrown and my friend and I had to sit there for 1/2 hour trying desperately to keep from bursting into hysterics. We still laugh about it almost daily.
Thank you for making me giggle yet again. :)

Must be from Ohio. I keep trying to tell everyone that cornhole means something very very different outside of Ohio.
Posted by: Angie at Nov 1, 2007 8:00:55 PM
are you sure you want to post again? why not just wait and make it a whole month? no, i'm not bitter.
Posted by: kimblahg at Nov 1, 2007 8:08:08 PM
In the South, cornhole is played at most tailgates. My theory is that it is easy to do while drunk. However, I refuse to play the game out of the fact that it is named CORNHOLE.
Posted by: Jessica at Nov 1, 2007 8:13:24 PM
See, that kind of makes me want to play more.
Posted by: Julie at Nov 1, 2007 8:16:43 PM
They play this at my office. (Well, on the grass outside...) I was extremely confused the first time they told me what it was called.
Posted by: Kat with a K at Nov 1, 2007 8:21:02 PM
"oh, shut your cornhole"
"we recommend a liberal amount of butter on your cornhole"
"just when you thought it was safe to bring out your cornhole..."
OK, those sucked. I'm off my game. Looking forward to tomorrow's post.

According to Wikipedia, the World Championship of Cornhole is held in South Webster, Ohio.
Posted by: Elizabeth at Nov 1, 2007 8:54:42 PM
Hmmm. I can think of some people for whom it might be a perfect gift.
Posted by: maggie at Nov 1, 2007 9:09:07 PM
We call it beanbag as well...it's an addicting game...the beanbag one I mean, not anything about cornholes. :) Although the one you referenced said it has "river rocks" in the bags, I think they are most often made with corn kernels (the kind you get at a feed store). My parents just made their own version of the game and my mom put corn kernels in the bags, but we have still never called it cornhole...that's just wrong!
Posted by: Angela at Nov 1, 2007 9:16:41 PM
I was born and raised in South Carolina, and while we have a state dance called the Shag, and our state drink is milk, we have never called beanbag games *cornhole*. That is awesomely horrible.
Posted by: Maren at Nov 1, 2007 9:36:26 PM
Just had to delurk and say I work with a woman whose her daughter had the cornhole game at her wedding rehersal dinner!! She spent an entire day telling us how they made the cornhole boards.
Where's Jeff Foxworthy when you need him?
Posted by: Martina at Nov 1, 2007 9:38:09 PM
I had to laugh when I read this. Me and my dad just had an argument about what the game is actually called, he couldn't believe it was called corn hole and absolutely refuses to ever use that term lol
Posted by: Nicole at Nov 1, 2007 9:41:36 PM
*T.P. not included.
(You know, like Beavis and Butthead? Cornhulio needed t.p. for his bunghole? Oh, nevermind.)

I'm *really* looking forward to seeing the post tomorrow after seeing your teaser (mostly out of a morbid curiousity). But really - glad to see that you're back, and that you're going to post more. Can't wait!
Posted by: Sarah at Nov 1, 2007 10:06:02 PM
Nothing earth-shaking, I promise. Just didn't have it together for a real post this evening.
Posted by: Julie at Nov 1, 2007 10:09:59 PM
I don't know THAT particular game, but is it anything like playing 'Ar$ehole'?
Because I'm *fantastic* at that. Just ask my clinic,
J

It started as a west-side-of-Cincy thing... Amazing how far it's spread. And yes, it's all about a game where you can hold a beer in one hand and toss the bag (traditionally filled with corn) with the other!
Posted by: Heather at Nov 1, 2007 10:50:31 PM
Hey I grew up playing this game! It's certainly not new and we always called it Indiana horse shoes. This is going to sound terribly redneck and I assure you that we are not, but we just made our own set this summer. I guess the reason people started calling it corn hole is because the bags are well, filled with corn. I have no idea why but corn it is. Anyway it is a fun game and safer than real horseshoes with kids around. We even made a mini one for our son. Now I really sound like hick LOL!
Posted by: from oh at Nov 1, 2007 10:52:02 PM
A friend had this game at her recent housewarming party. My husband spent the entire evening coming up with ways to use "cornhole" in a sentence.
"Whoo, honey, we're gonna have to call the sitter and tell her we'll be late -- I'm gonna cornhole all night!"
And, yes, I spent the whole night pretending like I didn't know him.
Posted by: Ashley at Nov 1, 2007 11:08:35 PM
I HATED seeing this name EVERYWHERE in the midwest when we were out there last year -- it's especially big at tailgaters during football season. And all the firehouses and lodges host cornhole games. That word gives me the willies!!!
Posted by: mudnyc at Nov 1, 2007 11:35:35 PM
Okay, how about "would you like some cornholes with your an(g)us burger?"
Seriously, is this a new theme? (Come for the vaginas, stay for the ***holes?)
Posted by: bobsmama at Nov 2, 2007 3:28:48 AM
I *hate* that name for the beanbag toss game. We have a friend who occasionally brings it over to play and I cringe every time he and my partner talk about playing "cornhole".
Ughghgh.
Posted by: Karen at Nov 2, 2007 4:36:53 AM
When I first moved to Ohio, I couldn't believe that everyone would just be all "let's go play some cornhole" with a straight face. Now I get pissed off when puritanical companies and organizations call it "corn toss" or "bean bags." Just own the dirty name! I've even gone so far as to get my husband a custom set with Chicago Bears on it (remarkably apt this season!).
Posted by: books at Nov 2, 2007 7:55:48 AM
BWAAAHHHHAAAAAAAAAA
No additional joke needed IMO!!!!
Posted by: Michelle at Nov 2, 2007 8:13:20 AM
Lord, everyone plays cornhole around here. My friends from Cincy have a huge tournament every year, and even the ritzy restauranunt/bar/rich DINK hangout on the water here in Indy has two sets of boards set up on the "beach." It's like a Midwestern obsession.
Hey, books, your Bears cornhole board is perfect for your season *snerk*. Go Pack go! Hee.
Posted by: mazarin at Nov 2, 2007 8:14:57 AM
Totally an Ohio/midwest thing. But a very, VERY fun game. Must be played with beer in hand. Stupid name, super fun game. And yes, I live in Cincy.
Posted by: at Nov 2, 2007 8:21:50 AM
I'm with Books on this: own the name. In fact, improve it where possible. For this one, perhaps "Cornhole Toss"?
Posted by: amy at Nov 2, 2007 8:33:44 AM
I guess that because I work at a university, this is not an unknown game. In fact, it may have replaced beer pong at my university. Stupid name, stupider game. Obviously, I'm not a fan of horseshoes either.
Posted by: Jen at Nov 2, 2007 8:37:52 AM
There was an article in Newsweek about this last month. They quoted the president of the American Cornhole Assoc, who admitted his dad would turn over in his grave if he knew, but he said, "Hey. You throw a bag of CORN. In a HOLE. CORNHOLE. There it is. Now be quiet."
And then Newsweek pointed out that there is a copyrighted version being called "Baggo," but since it is marketed exclusively by Dick's sporting goods, they weren't sure that was any better a name. Dick's Baggo! Ha!

When our neighbors invited us to a picnic telling us we would be playing cornhole I looked at my husband and said..are they kidding? I am from NY..hubby from Ohio so he had to explain it to me. Cornhole means something ENTIRELY different in NY!
Posted by: chrissy s at Nov 2, 2007 9:14:10 AM
You know, I was WONDERING why all these suburban Chicago people were playing these bean-bag toss games. I never heard of the thing, but judging from what I've read here, it's apparently all the rage throughout the midwest - even in these northern suburbs of Chicago! Who knew?
Posted by: Sarah at Nov 2, 2007 9:16:05 AM
I had never heard of this game until moving to Ohio. Imagine pulling up to your new house and having a sign in the neighbor's yard reading "HOME OF THE CORNHOLE GAMES!!". It wasn't until 4 months later that we knew what cornhole actually was. We sure had a bunch of ideas as to what it could be though.....
Posted by: Jennifer at Nov 2, 2007 9:41:39 AM
Are they coming out with a junior edition, "CornBaby"?
Posted by: Gina at Nov 2, 2007 10:30:44 AM
I know. I KNOW! Ok, it's a gross name! But we make up for it with Graeters. www.graeters.com
Posted by: LF at Nov 2, 2007 10:33:14 AM
You know, I don't think they call it "Cornhole" around Chicago. I'm pretty sure it's just called "bean bag toss".
Posted by: Sarah at Nov 2, 2007 11:11:58 AM
Um, yeah, I'm from California and we just call it bean bag toss. My Mom made our bean bags, and out here in Cali we stuff things like that with Pinto beans. It's our Mexican heritage, I guess.
Posted by: Brooke Habecker at Nov 2, 2007 12:40:43 PM
I do not know whether "beanholing" is better or worse.
Posted by: Julie at Nov 2, 2007 12:46:00 PM
Um Gina, there is a version for baby (I looked it up on leaps and bounds too).. Let me quote verbatim from the promo:
Everybody's playing "Cornhole"...now baby can, too! Little ones love "feeding" these soft, wide-mouth critters the pint-sized textured bean bags. Makes an entertaining put-and-take toy now…
I did not make this up, I promise
Posted by: Diane at Nov 2, 2007 12:48:10 PM
I think Dick's Sporting Goods should use the original name. I mean... c'mon... who WOULDN'T want to buy a game called "Dick's Cornhole?"

Dear God... there's an "ass"ociation...

Oh, and after this, there had BETTER be some costumed-Charlie pics. And you shall be forgiven and we will never speak of this post ever again.

My husband made one of these games last summer. In looking up the "regulation" measurements and rules of the game, he had to consult the American Cornhole Association's web page (yes, there is one and god I hope they sell t-shirts). He didn't recall the website so he googled "cornhole". At work. At his government job.
Advice to all - NEVER google "cornhole". At work. At your government job.
Posted by: Sally at Nov 2, 2007 2:12:44 PM
Remind me to tell you someday about a game they play back in the old country called "dirty ass." Sounds like it would be a good complement to cornhole.
