What passes for nesting around here

Driveway

You know, I guess you people are helpful and all, but I cannot help but notice that among all your well-meaning comments, not one of you advised me not to have our 259-foot driveway completely torn up, regraded, and rebuilt four days — or perhaps sooner, what with the randomly occurring contractions and all — before having a baby.

Thanks for nothing, Internets.

We're tactful, you know ;-)

Lovely wood behind your house. Perfect!

Just thankful last Thursday's tornado action didn't either affect your home OR send you into labor.....

Don't have your 259-foot driveway completely torn up, regraded, and rebuilt four days — or perhaps sooner, what with the randomly occurring contractions and all — before having a baby. Oh, too late.

Uh, well, that doesn't look fun.

But holy crap...Four days! Already!

Yay!

Posted by: Christine at Jul 28, 2008 11:27:23 AM

Isn't the cliche for nesting to be inside your house? You know, scrubbing floors with a toothbrush at 3 a.m.?

We had our entire first floor torn up and redone with laminate wood two days before Owen came home from the hospital, then had the ducts cleaned the morning after. Fun times.

Posted by: Kris at Jul 28, 2008 11:27:55 AM

Uh...sorry about the missing of the ball. I will give you this nugget though. Don't get a new puppy.

There. I helped. See? :)

Posted by: Greta/Does This Blog Make Us Look Fat? at Jul 28, 2008 11:32:50 AM

Now really, come on. It's not like you're building a deck, or having your sewage system dug up. What's all the fuss about? ;-)

Posted by: N at Jul 28, 2008 11:38:58 AM

Well, that was entirely thoughtless of us. Very sorry.

Random contractions, ha?

Posted by: JuliaKB at Jul 28, 2008 11:42:04 AM

I didn't stop to consider that you have leftover nesting to get out of your system. You are, of course, Julie-this means you have to do it bigger and better than everyone.

Yikes, girl-this means you'll go into labor today!

Posted by: Suzanne at Jul 28, 2008 11:43:00 AM

Don't drive the Bobcat. They are bouncy.

Posted by: Robyn at Jul 28, 2008 11:47:26 AM

Oh dear, remember that idiot Jerry O'Connell's comments? Seems they're expecting twins.

When my Mom nested with me...she built a shed. 9 months pregnant, lumber in hand.

You're not crazy, just on the road to raising children who love to built. Or somethin'.

As a side note, I was rereading some of your old entries (I just moved to a new country...can't sleep), and your comments about quilting have inspired me! So, new generation of quilters are starting up! :)

Posted by: Gabrielle at Jul 28, 2008 11:51:09 AM

I hope you remembered to remove your getaway car from the garage.

Posted by: Katy at Jul 28, 2008 11:53:06 AM

On the bright side: should you still be encountering turtle-type difficulty rising from horizontal to vertical and need a helpful nudge in the right direction - that Bobcat looks just the ticket.

Given that it is my son's first birthday party on Friday (I have, rashly, invited an absolute horde of babies) and the weather chap is forecasting a monsoon for our garden party... well, my thoughts will most likely need a happy place to escape to. I am therefore utterly delighted that your current obstetric schedule gives me something lovely (because I'm not the one contracting) to think about. Much obliged to you!

Very warmest wishes, Julie. Can't wait for the first photo of your youngest.

Posted by: Hairy Farmer Family at Jul 28, 2008 11:56:27 AM

Oh geez! Good luck with that! Look on the bright side...soon you'll have a beautiful new driveway :)

Posted by: dabby at Jul 28, 2008 11:57:20 AM

I thought the quilting and the cats were "the nesting", but the heavy equipment is a nice touch. I'm such a lazy late pregnancy chick, I just baked.....

Posted by: Liz at Jul 28, 2008 11:58:32 AM

On the other hand, I bet Charlie is enthralled with the machinery and activity -

Posted by: sinda at Jul 28, 2008 11:58:46 AM

You've subcontracted it. That's totally fine. We advised you not to do it yourself.

Posted by: SarcastiCarrie at Jul 28, 2008 12:00:40 PM

If your 3.5 year old is anything like mine, your timing is perfect! Who can feel slighted by the presence of a new baby when there is a SKID STEER OUTSIDE, MOMMA?!?

Posted by: meghan at Jul 28, 2008 12:08:23 PM

The walk out to the road will do you good.

Posted by: Lala at Jul 28, 2008 12:11:43 PM

OMG!
You really are not doing that right now?
Big time nesting I see for you.

Posted by: Melissa P. at Jul 28, 2008 12:14:31 PM

Also as we are looking for advice...

-Be sure not to start repainting every room.

-Do not retile the floor.

-Do not remodel the kitchen.

-Do not remodel anything!

-Do not re-roof the house...

Don't do any of that!

Posted by: Heather at Jul 28, 2008 12:16:53 PM

Well, one must do these things before baby arrives because after is just not happening. I tended to take on the large projects at the last minute too.

That is some long driveway...your home must be a nice distance from the road. I love it!

Best of luck for the next few days and beyond.

Posted by: greenie3 at Jul 28, 2008 12:17:10 PM

Speaking of babies in 4 days, what's the plan for telling the Internets? Is anyone going to guest blog for you, or should we go to someone else's blog (eg, Julia) for the news? Best of luck- I hope it goes as smoothly as it did not go the last time around (except of course the part about where you end up with another perfectly healthy wonderful little boy).

Posted by: Clover at Jul 28, 2008 12:17:27 PM

*Snort* You do like a challenge, don't you? Good luck for Friday (or sooner).

Posted by: Liz at Jul 28, 2008 12:21:12 PM

Hey Julie -

In case you get the urge, you probably shouldn't tear up your driveway a week before having a new baby!!

(HeHeHe!!) Aren't I helpful!!

Posted by: Heather at Jul 28, 2008 12:35:44 PM

Wait, are we supposed to be impressed? Because I don't even see you in that photo. Are you the one driving the bobcat? If so, then OK (though LOL at Hairy Farmer Family's comment, and of course for that you'll need Paul to take the wheel).

But since you're apparently looking for advice (who knew?), here's a tip for post-partum: don't have every public room (kitchen, living room, family room, etc.) in your house ripped out and remodeled, meanwhile cramming all the stuff that was in those rooms into bedrooms 2 & 3 leaving only the master bedroom for you and the tots (and the grill on the deck for cooking). Really, just don't do it.

Wow...four days. So very excited and hopeful for you.

Posted by: Alex at Jul 28, 2008 12:44:07 PM

Well, at least it adds to the excitement, right?! And I'm sure one of those nice gentleman wouldn't mind hauling you to the end of the driveway in the Bobcat if these contractions keep up! I'll be thinking of you this week, and hoping all is well.

Posted by: Angela at Jul 28, 2008 12:46:19 PM

Dammit! I KNEW there was something I forgot.

Posted by: mb at Jul 28, 2008 12:51:53 PM

Ya know, Jules, I was going to mention the driveway thing, but I didn't want to appear to be doing another "mommy drive-by"... now I see I was being overly cautious.

Sorry.

CONTRACTIONS !!!!!????!!!!! OH OH OH !!!!! Holy SHIT !!! EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) GOOD LUCK !!! :)

Posted by: Danielle the hor at Jul 28, 2008 1:14:25 PM

And I thought I was being ambitious when I decided to tackle the bathroom today! HAH! You're crazy! DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE :)

Random contractions, hmmmm? When hooked up to the NST machine today I got nothing, nada, zip in the contraction department. You just might beat me yet, woman. I hope you've got a four wheel drive vehicle that can tackle that driveway.

Posted by: Chickenpig at Jul 28, 2008 1:19:06 PM

Maybe having no driveway will make you wait to be 100% sure you are in labor? Hopefully it is done before you have to leave for the hospital!

On a side note, we bought a second home 4 weeks before AJU5 was born and started demolition. It was fun to swing a hammer and demolish things - got rid of a lot of stress, etc!

Posted by: SSU at Jul 28, 2008 1:25:16 PM

I was crazy enough to spend a few days last week working dilligently instead of staring at your website waiting for the big event (my usual habit), so I'm a little late to the game, but holy hell, did you know you're having a baby on Friday? This Friday? Like the This Friday that happens This Week? Just sayin'...

Posted by: m at Jul 28, 2008 1:27:10 PM

Shit...I thought that email had sent, but I just found it in the drafts folder...

Um...if it's not too late (since I really think the dug-up look says "earthy!" "laid-back!" and "unpaved!"), don't get the driveway redone.

Posted by: Mel at Jul 28, 2008 1:29:03 PM

Assuming you didn't have the foresight to move your car up to the road ... YOU'RE TRAPPED! Which means of course you'll go into labor! Wa-hoo - here we go!

Posted by: Lisa at Jul 28, 2008 1:38:14 PM

well, if you're gonna go, go big!

(4 days! squee!)

Posted by: Jen at Jul 28, 2008 1:41:03 PM

Um, no, never thought of that one. But now I have a great suggestion to offer others! Thanks! As to the contractions and the no driveway and the 4 days at most--every good wish to you and yours as always. And don't even THINK about re-doing your bathroom.

Posted by: terri c at Jul 28, 2008 1:53:50 PM

Really? Would that have stopped you anyway? LOL

Probably should stop after the driveway for a few days.

Posted by: Jenn at Jul 28, 2008 2:30:23 PM

Oh, LORD: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20206200,00.html

Posted by: ALH at Jul 28, 2008 2:33:14 PM

Nothing says nesting more than a bobcat and heavy machinery!

Posted by: annie at Jul 28, 2008 2:57:27 PM

The whole repaving thing was on my mind and I just knew I should have delurked to tell you not to do it. But, then I got busy and dropped the ball. I suck. Sorry.

Random contractions!?! Way to slip that little tidbit in there. Here's everything going smoothly and in accordance with your birth plan!! Good luck!

P.S. Can you believe that dripping sack of douche gets TWO babies before some of use get even one? The universe sure is fucked up.

Posted by: Kim at Jul 28, 2008 3:07:10 PM

I'm too busy having my kitchen redone at 37 weeks gestation to give you such good advice. ;-)

Posted by: Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE at Jul 28, 2008 3:07:46 PM

Oops. That should read "Here's to everything" Sorry.

Posted by: Kim at Jul 28, 2008 3:08:31 PM

While driving to work this morning I thought, "I wonder how Julie is doing?" It's odd to think like this about someone you don't personally know and will most likely never meet, but it seemed appropriate. And then I read you've schedule the birth for Friday, lordy! Who is organizing the e-baby shower?? I have cute onesies that I must buy and send to a complete stranger and her new baby!

Regarding the news from the O'Connell-Romijn house, boo, who cares. I'm much more excited about seeing your little guy.

Posted by: Teresa at Jul 28, 2008 3:09:45 PM

Julie, I wish you and the baby well!

I had to laugh this morning when I saw that the Duggar's just announced their next baby is on the way. I mean, um, seriously? They are just gross now.

Posted by: Plumwin at Jul 28, 2008 3:20:30 PM

Wow! You really know how to nest!

Posted by: Heather at Jul 28, 2008 3:42:52 PM

haha my sister - who I live with - is pregnant and having some serious nesting fiascos. Last week, I carried the fucking dining room table upstairs (TWISTY stairs, that is), plunked it down where she so desired, and got a half-hearted "actually, never mind. Let's bring it back down."

Posted by: Jamie at Jul 28, 2008 3:47:35 PM

I can't quite get past the 259 foot part - we can't even park 2 cars in our city driveway and we're amongst the lucky that even have a driveway! I'm sure that'll be a great driveway for the kids to play on! 4 days...wow!

Posted by: Julie at Jul 28, 2008 4:17:24 PM

Well you couldn't exactly bring that baby home with the driveway being all bumpy and stuff.. first impressions and all.
